Course Description:

In this article, Michelle Doran, RN, DNP, NPD-BC will identify the 4 main principles of ethics; describe 3 common ethical dilemmas in the NICU; and discuss 2 strategies to effectively manage ethical challenges in the NICU.

Michelle Doran has more than 25 years of clinical and administrative leadership experience in nursing, with a focus on pediatrics and maternal and child health. She has worked in acute care, primary care, pediatric rehabilitation, continuing nursing education, the health plan industry, and in leadership consulting. Currently, she is the director of the Healthcare Division of Corporate Counseling Associates (CCA), an Employee Assistance Program and Human Resources Solutions company, and is a professional development specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). She also serves on the MGH Institutional Review Board. Dr Doran earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from James Madison University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, where she concentrated on community health and participated in the AmeriCorps Program. She has a master’s degree in nursing from Regis College, with a specialty in nursing leadership. She has a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from The George Washington University School of Nursing. Dr Doran also provides writing and editing consultative services to nurses who write for professional publications.
